Fall Rome
Rome ruled much of Europe around the Mediterranean for over 1000 years. The Roman Empire grew so large that it became difficult to govern. The Emperor Diocletian decided to divided the empire into two parts, the Eastern Empire and the Western Empire. The Western Empire was ruled by Rome, the Eastern Empire was ruled by Constantinople.
The strength of the Western Roman Empire began to decline and in 476 AD, barbarian tribes conquered Rome. They forced the Roman emperor to give up his crown. This is considered to be the end of the Roman Empire. The "fall" of Rome is referring to the Western Roman Empire.
The Fall of the Roman Empire was a gradual event, it did not occur over night. There are many factors that contributed to the fall of Rome, including:
~Roman Army no longer "unbeatable"
~leaders became self-serving and dishonest
~Attacks from neighboring barbaric tribes

The Dark Ages Begins
The Western Roman Empire now lacked a "central government". Without a government to lead the empire, things began to "fall apart" (Think: Fall of Rome). Roads fell into disrepair, skills were forgotten and trading began to decline and cities started to shrink. For these reasons, people of the Renaissance Period would later refer to this time period as the Dark Ages of Europe.
